It is primarily used in industrial applications such as precision grinding, semiconductor manufacturing, and as a raw material for advanced ceramics and refractories.
Primary Types and Applications:
The properties of SiC micro powder vary based on its purity and production method.
- Green Silicon Carbide: This is the highest purity form (typically ≥98.5%). It is sharp and friable, making it ideal for grinding hard, brittle materials like tungsten carbide, optical glass, and ceramics. It is also used extensively in semiconductor wafer cutting and high-end cookware coatings due to its bio-inert nature.
- Black Silicon Carbide: Contains slightly more impurities (95%–98% purity) which increases its toughness compared to the green variety. It is used for grinding materials with low tensile strength, such as cast iron, brass, aluminum, and stone.
- Metallurgical Grade: Used as a deoxidizer in steelmaking to improve steel quality and reduce energy consumption.
- Refractory Grade: Formulated to withstand extreme temperatures (up to 2,800°C), it is used to line industrial furnaces, kilns, and boilers.
