                               Vacuum pumps are mechanical devices that remove gas or air molecules from a sealed volume to create a partial or high vacuum. They are categorized by their operating principles—primarily positive displacementmomentum transfer, and entrapment.

 

 

Vacuum Pump Types and Mechanisms:

Vacuum pumps are chosen based on the required vacuum depth (rough, medium, or high) and the presence of lubricant.

  • Rotary Vane Pumps: The most common type, using rotating vanes to trap and compress gas. These are widely used in laboratories, HVAC servicing, and automotive braking.
  • Diaphragm Pumps: These use a flexible diaphragm to create suction without oil, making them ideal for clean-room, medical, and food applications.
  • Liquid Ring Pumps: Use a rotating ring of liquid (usually water) as a seal. They are highly resistant to dust and common in chemical processing and pharmaceutical production.
  • Dry Screw and Scroll Pumps: Oil-free designs that provide high-speed pumping for sensitive industrial environments like semiconductor manufacturing.
  • Momentum Transfer (High Vacuum): These include diffusion and turbomolecular pumps, which use high-speed jets or blades to move molecules. They require a secondary "backing pump" to start operating from atmospheric pressure.
