Peel ply is a synthetic woven fabric used in composite manufacturing to create a clean, textured surface on cured laminates. It is applied directly to the wet resin during the layup process and is peeled off once the part has fully cured, leaving behind a surface that is ready for secondary bonding, painting, or additional laminating without the need for extensive sanding.
Key Functions:
- Surface Preparation: By leaving a woven impression on the resin, it ensures a roughened surface that enhances mechanical bonding for subsequent layers or adhesives.
- Contamination Protection: It acts as a protective barrier, preventing dust, grease, or silicone from contaminating the laminate surface before it is ready for further processing.
- Resin Management: In vacuum bagging, porous peel plies allow trapped air and excess resin to bleed through into the breather fabric, helping to achieve an optimal resin-to-fibre ratio.
