BFRP (Basalt Fibre Reinforced Polymer) rebars are advanced composite reinforcement bars made by combining high-strength basalt fibres with a polymer resin matrix (typically epoxy or vinyl ester). They are primarily used as a sustainable, corrosion-resistant alternative to traditional steel rebars in concrete structures.
Key Characteristics & Performance
- Corrosion Resistance: Unlike steel, BFRP does not rust, making it ideal for marine environments, bridge decks exposed to salt, and chemical plants.
- High Strength-to-Weight Ratio: It is approximately 4.5 times lighter than steel while possessing up to 2.5 times higher tensile strength.
- Sustainability: Produced from naturally occurring basalt rock without chemical additives, BFRP has a carbon footprint significantly lower (less than 10%) than that of steel.
- Non-Conductive & Non-Magnetic: It is an electrical insulator and does not interfere with magnetic fields, which is critical for MRI rooms and data-intensive facilities.
- Thermal Expansion: Its coefficient of thermal expansion is similar to concrete, reducing internal stresses during temperature changes.
